Back-end development for a comfort control system

Client: Daimler AG

Project: Back-end development for a comfort control system

Methods used: agile development, DevOps, Lift+Shift into the client's cloud environment

Technologies used: Java, Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL

Intelligent and voice-controlled solutions are a building block in the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer's strategy to offer the best mobility experience for their customers. But how do automotive customers gain a customer-centric experience that doesn't stop at high-quality haptic or acoustic experiences like a leather armature or a voice assistant? jambit had the pleasure of accompanying its long-standing client on a special project to personalize the customer experience.

With the Energizing Coach, the car manufacturer creates an experience for its customers that offers services based on vehicle, vital and weather data and makes driving more pleasant. A jambit team of software developers, user-centered design experts and DevOps engineers has been supporting the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer in the project since 2016. The close cooperation with our client is an example of how jambit provides technical and professional support from the vision, to prototypes, to production readiness and operation.

How do automobiles respond better to their drivers and their circumstances?

The system improves comfort functions for drivers in the vehicle by sending recommendations for Energizing Comfort programs to the vehicle. These recommendations are based on data such as current weather, current traffic situation or vital data such as personal sleep quality. Energizing Comfort programs bundle predefined individual functions such as seat heating and massage to offer a personalized and customer-centric driving experience.

The basis is the Health Back-end. The back-end processes a wide range of data in real time. This includes vehicle data, such as interior and exterior temperature, as well as data from smartwatches or wearables connected via the Mercedes me ENERGIZING app.

Kundin schaut vor dem Automobil auf die Uhr

jambit has accompanied the project from the beginning in building a back-end architecture. Starting with the prototype development in 2016, the jambit team accompanied all issues related to implementation of the functions in the vehicle. jambit supported the connection to data sources and further systems of the client to calculate the recommendations. Using a lift-and-shift approach, jambit migrated the service from the data center to the cloud environment. The developers not only implemented technical features, but also provided support for technical issues, in particular for existing and new algorithms.

  • We were particularly excited by this long-term project because of the technical versatility demanded by the client. In addition to software and DevOps topics, we were able to support with data protection and IT security.
